Bridging Open Work Permit

A bridging open work permit (BOWP) is a type of work permit issued to eligible individuals who are already in Canada and have submitted an application for permanent residence. It allows them to continue working in Canada while waiting for a decision on their application. The bridging open work permit is designed to bridge the gap between the expiry of their current work permit and the finalization of their permanent residence application. This permit is typically issued to individuals who have applied under certain immigration programs, such as the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program, or Federal Skilled Trades Program.

BOWP does not apply in situations where the Applicant has Provincial Nomination Certificate and,

  • has not applied for the federal processing, or
  • has not received Acknowledgement of Receipt (application number) from the IRCC for the federal part of the PR application.

Bridging Open Work Permit in Canada: Secure Your Employment Pathway

If you are  awaiting permanent residency approval, staying in Canada and working should not be on hold. The Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) is specifically designed to keep you employed and secure while your PR application is being processed. It bridges the gap between applying for permanent residence and receiving your final status, allowing eligible applicants to continue working without interruption. This article will walk you through eligibility requirements, the application process, key benefits, and how to keep your work permit active.

What is the Bridging Open Work Permit?

The Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) is a temporary permit for individuals who have applied for permanent residency and currently hold a valid work permit that is soon to expire. By applying for a BOWP, you can remain in Canada and work legally while your PR application is under review, helping you avoid gaps in employment.

Who is Eligible for the Bridging Open Work Permit?

To qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit, you need to meet certain criteria:

  • Active PR Application: You must have applied for permanent residency under an eligible immigration program, such as Express Entry or the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
  • Expiring Work Permit: Your current work permit should be valid but nearing its expiration date.
  • Inside Canada Status: You need to be in Canada when applying for the BOWP.

Eligible immigration programs for the BOWP include Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades), Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), and Agri-Food Pilot applicants, among others.

How to Apply for the Bridging Open Work Permit

Applying for a BOWP is a straightforward process:

  1. Check Your PR Application Status: Ensure your PR application is complete and in progress, as this is required for the BOWP application.
  2. Gather Documentation: Key documents include your passport, current work permit, PR application confirmation, and other supporting documents.
  3. Submit Online Application: Apply for the BOWP through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) online portal. An online application offers the advantage of quick submissions and easier document tracking.
  4. Pay the Fees: The BOWP fee includes a work permit fee and an open work permit holder fee.
  5. Await Approval: Processing times vary but usually take a few weeks to a couple of months. You can monitor your application status through your IRCC account.

Benefits of the Bridging Open Work Permit

The BOWP is a valuable option for those in transition to PR, offering:

  • Continued Employment: Remain employed while awaiting PR status, minimizing gaps in your work experience.
  • Flexibility: Since the BOWP is an open permit, you can work for any employer across Canada, unlike employer-specific permits.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you would not have to leave Canada or disrupt your life due to an expiring work permit allows for a smoother transition to permanent residency.

Common Questions About the Bridging Open Work Permit

Can I Apply for a BOWP if I have Lost My Job?
Yes, you can apply as long as you meet the other eligibility requirements. The BOWP gives you the freedom to seek new employment while your PR is processed.
