Admission in Canada

Canada attracts a significant number of students from around the world. In order to be eligible for admission, applicants typically need to meet certain admission requirements as established by colleges and universities, also known as designated learning institutions (DLIs). The admission criteria may vary depending on the institution and program of choice. Additionally, universities and colleges require international students to demonstrate proficiency in English or French by providing language test scores such as IELTS, TOEFL, CELPIP, PTE, Duolingo, etc.

Level of Studies in Canada

In Canada, the levels of studies generally follow a similar structure as in many other countries. Here are the typical levels of studies in Canada:
Primary Education: This includes elementary school, which usually starts from kindergarten or grade 1 and continues until grade 6 or 8, depending on the province.
Secondary Education: Also known as high school, secondary education typically covers grades 7 to 12. Students usually receive a general education during these years and can choose elective courses based on their interests.
Post-Secondary Education: This level of education includes various types of institutions and programs:
1. College: Colleges in Canada offer career-oriented programs, technical/vocational training, and diplomas or certificates.
2. University: Universities offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in various fields of study. Undergraduate degrees include Bachelor’s degrees, while postgraduate degrees include Master’s and Doctoral degrees.
3. Technical Institutes: These institutes provide specialized training in specific fields such as technology, engineering, or business.
Continuing Education: This level includes professional development courses, certificate programs, and adult education courses offered by colleges, universities, and other educational institutions.

College Change in Canada

College change is collectively referred to as changing your college or university in Canada after you arrived as an international student. Most students change DLIs in below two situations:

Completion of current program

This applies when your current program is complete or about to complete in the next one to two terms and you are looking for another program to enhance your study experience or immigration opportunities.
For example, someone completes a one-year graduate certificate program in Ontario and now wants to apply for a one-year graduate certificate program in Alberta.

You do not need to report this change to IRCC if you are applying for a study permit renewal before starting the new program.

You will need to report this change to IRCC if you are starting the new program before your current study permit expires or you submit a renewal application.

Unsatisfied with the current program

Occasionally, students find out that the program is not a good match for them because of various reasons, such as PGWP eligibility, level of difficulty or ease, culture shock, financial reasons, etc. Sometimes students accept admission from DLIs that do not offer PGWP eligible programs and realize this after coming to Canada.

At YCI, we don’t offer admission from the DLIs that do not offer PGWP eligible programs.

You will need to report this change to IRCC if you are starting the new program before your current study permit expires or you submit a renewal application.

Considerations for the new program

Research

Start by researching potential DLIs that offer the program or courses you are interested in. Look into their admission requirements, program details, campus facilities, and student support services.

Application

Once you have shortlisted the DLIs and programs you want to apply for, contact us for a detailed assessment. We will guide you through the required documents and application process.

Financial Considerations

Review the financial obligations of the selected programs. Consider application fees, tuition and deposit fees, payment timelines, credit transfers, relocation costs, etc.

Immigration Matters

Ensure that you update your study permit with the new college’s information or apply for renewal. We offer discounts to our student clients for study permit renewals services.
